Noam Shpancer
At midlife, a little voice inside my head said "this isn't working." I decided to listen to that voice and I went back to school to pursue a career I love. As someone who has overcome my own challenges and been a client of therapy myself, I understand that the therapeutic journey isn't always easy, but it's worth it. In my sessions, I meet you where you are and guide you towards leveraging your own strengths to achieve your goals. I offer a person-centred, collaborative approach that puts your comfort and safety first.
I'm a big proponent of mindfulness both in my client sessions and personal life. Many people equate mindfulness with meditation (and meditation can certainly be part of a mindfulness practice!) but mindfulness simply refers to the non-judgmental awareness and acceptance of present moment experience. Research has consistently shown self-acceptance to be a stronger motivator for change than self criticism.
When I'm not working, I can usually be found hiking with my dog Ginger, jogging on trails, exploring all that Paris, Ontario has to offer, or reading about mental health.
In my practice, I work with individual adults (16+) and couples. I have experience helping people navigate symptoms of anxiety, depression, OCD, and bipolar disorder. I work with people who are stuck in rumination, paralyzed by fear of uncertainty, and are managing uncomfortable emotions including anger, guilt, and shame. With years of experience volunteering within the recovery community, I'm also passionate about helping people reach their goals related to substance use to improve the quality of their lives.
Leveraging knowledge and skills gained from Gottman Method Couples Therapy - Level 1 training, I help couples find healthier ways to navigate conflict, build friendship and intimacy, and create shared meaning within their relationships.
I have a master's degree in counseling psychology from Yorkville University, where I graduated with distinction. I also hold certifications in trauma-informed therapy, acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT), mindfulness-based cognitive therapy (MBCT), emotion-focused therapy (EFT), emotion freedom technique, and Gottman Method Couples Therapy - Level 1 .
